About Defeating the Debt

What is Defeating the Debt?

Defeating the Debt is an independent educational resource that explains debt in plain English: how to build a payoff plan, compare relief options honestly, handle specific kinds of debt, budget, and rebuild credit. We do not sell debt relief, we are not paid to recommend companies, and nothing here is financial, legal, or tax advice.

What we cover

This site is organized around the questions people actually ask when debt gets heavy. How do I start? Which relief option fits, and what does each really cost? What do I do about this specific credit-card, medical, or student-loan situation? How do I budget and build a cushion so it does not happen again? How do I rebuild my credit afterward, and how do I avoid getting scammed along the way? Each hub answers one of those clearly, and links to the others.

How we think about debt help

Two principles run through everything here. First, honesty about trade-offs: debt settlement, consolidation, and bankruptcy all have real downsides, and we name them rather than hide them behind hype. Second, free help first: a nonprofit credit counselor will often give you a better, cheaper start than any advertised product, so we point there before anywhere else.

What we are not

We are not a debt-relief company, a lender, or a law firm. We do not enroll you in programs, hold your money, or take a cut of anything. We do not provide personalized financial, legal, or tax advice, because that requires knowing your full situation and the proper credentials. For that, we consistently point you to qualified professionals and nonprofit counselors. Our job is to make the landscape clear so your conversation with those people starts from a place of understanding.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Defeating the Debt sell debt relief or charge for help?
No. We are an independent educational resource. We do not sell debt-relief services, we do not charge readers, and we are not paid to recommend specific companies. Our aim is to explain options clearly and point you toward legitimate, often free help such as nonprofit credit counseling.
Is the content here financial or legal advice?
No. Everything on this site is general educational information, not personalized financial, legal, or tax advice. Your situation is unique, so for decisions that matter we encourage you to speak with a qualified professional, a nonprofit credit counselor, a licensed attorney, or a tax professional.
How do you keep the information accurate?
We focus on durable principles rather than figures that change, and we point to official and nonprofit sources for specifics like current programs and rules. If you spot something that looks out of date or wrong, contact us and we will review it.

Defeating the Debt is an independent educational resource. The content here is for general information only and is not financial, legal, or tax advice. Every situation is different, so before acting on anything you read here, consider speaking with a qualified professional or a nonprofit credit counselor (you can find one through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the U.S. Department of Justice list of approved counseling agencies).
